Not correct. In the reservation section on AA.com you can select, via check box, which passengers to request upgrades for on the same PNR. Frequently, my significant other requests upgrades for herself while I'm content to sit in an exit seat and save the stickers. This is done on same PNR (many times in fact) with no problem at all.
