For family travel purposes my concrete tip would be to go with a big rolling duffel. Here are the arguments:
- Best weight to volume ratio.
- Even a big duffel fits into any trunk.
- Easy to store when empty because it can be folded quite flat.
- Wrinkle free packing of suits is not an issue on family vacation.
The particular bag I'd suggest is one I own. I don't have a family but sometimes I have to transport a lot of stuff and my car also has a very small and oddly shaped trunk where no normal suitcase will fit.
The Eagle Creek ORV Super Trunk fits the bill perfectly. It has a very high volume of 8200 cu in which comes to about 130 liters. That's huge and the weight is only around 11.5 lbs. Most 26 inch rolling suitcases will be in that weight range but pack much less. Of course, if you don't use all the volume the bag will be just the smaller for it. The exterior pockets and wet bag inside will prove to be very practical for your intended use, I'm sure.
It is 68 linear inches which, in theory, makes it oversize. But it looks more compact and I've never had a problem checking it. I was never asked to pay extra. If you are afraid of that just get the smaller 30 inch model.
The EC warranty is also among the best in the business but the thing is built like a tank, so chances are you won't need it.
Finally, price is very reasonable.
