I also thought that as of March 1 we were going to receive automated upgrades on Alaska. Maybe that's not in place yet?
Unfortuantely I'm in London right now so I'm not going to call back to the US and ask Alaska about upgrades. I know in 2008 we would have just used one of our certs (which expired Feb 28, 2008) to immediately upgrade a Y fare.
It would be a total bummer to have the game changed where Y fares are only upgradeable at the gate as well.
If someone happens to call AS and gets an answer to this, can they please post it here? Otherwise, I will call them when I get back to the States this weekend and will let everyone know what I find out.
Thanks,

The reason you could pick premium seats was not because of your status, it was because of the ticket class (Y). Y tickets are always able to pick premium seats. I just booked some alaska tickets in non-Y and cannot pick premium seats even though I am a NW Plat.
