The only thing that I find frustrating about Tripadvisor reviews is lack of specificity - i.e., the service is awful, without explaining why. Each traveler has their own standards, and as others have suggested, there are cultural biases.
If people are specific about their complaints, I can determine whether their concern is relevant to me. I don't care about the tea kettle, but I can see why someone who relishes their morning tea does. Room size is relative. I don't need as much space as is often provided in American hotels, but I do like enough space to to be able to manoeuvre the 22" suitcase without damaging the furniture. So when people complain about room size, I like specifics. The more specificity as to the criticism and the praise, the better.
I tend not to worry about the actual ratings, it's the review that matters.
