If it was crew (albeit desparately trying to position somewhere), then that seems almost worse to me - that a crew member could act so inconsiderately regarding the leg space, and say absolutely nothing to the surprised passengers opposite. A small explanation would probably have gone a long way to easing the discomfort of facing a stranger for an entire flight / wondering why someone was on the jump seat.
