Am I expecting too much from pre-flight dining at JFK?

I was on the BA176 Sleeper Service from JFK to LHR last night. This was my first sleeper service and I was looking forward to a good meal in the lounge before take-off. The pre-dining area of the lounge at JFK looked like something you find in a motorway service station off the M1 - chairs were scattered everywhere, dirty dishes on tables, people desperately trying to find somewhere to sit...and the food was pretty awful too. A woman resembling a school dinner lady was serving up tasteless chicken korma or beef stew. Maybe I am expecting too much, but if I have paid close to GBP 5000 for a return flight advertised as having 'pre-flight dining' I would have thought the tables would have white table cloths, that there would be attentive service and the food would be good. Not a cheap looking self-service buffet.Especially since the food onboard was limited to 'warm olive bread' or 'hot chocolate with warm chocolate chip cookies'.
