On a transcon -- especially on the return to SEA, which is about an hour longer -- I would not hesitate to use the coupon if U opens up early. AS continues to sell the seats in F sometimes to within a few hours of departure before releasing any remaining F inventory into U. (On a flight back to SEA from BOS last week, MVPG U inventory did not open up until five hours prior to departure; it was all for-sale F until that point.)

So if any U opens up early, I'd grab it with the coupon, rather than hoping any F remaining at 72 hours will automatically become U at 72 hours. It usually doesn't happen until closer to departure when the airline is pretty sure it will sell no more revenue F inventory.
I've used my certs for this too and find its an excellent use of the certificates. Sunday I flew MIA-SEA-ANC in Y... too much Y (but no chance of flying F anyway...)

Glad U was still there ^
