I had this problem a couple of years ago in Mexico. The property (no longer associated with Starwood) accepted my reservation (SPG Award) then later sold the property out for a big wedding bash. The GM called me personally and explained what the situation was and asked me to reconsider my dates. As all of this was a family vacation with frequent flyer miles for air and points for hotels it would have been a major undertaking for me to move things around. I explained this to him and he finally came back saying they would honor my reservation BUT I needed to be aware of the situation and that since the wedding took the whole resort, many resort services would not be available or open - such as the restaurant!
Given the situation I relented - we needed to eat during our stay.
There was no offer of remuneration, points or even accommodating us at their sister property down the coast.
All in all a bad experience with this hotel and while having stayed there before I knew it was a 1st class destination I'm glad they are out of the Starwood family.
