Actually I have been "upgraded" several times from a dirt-cheap ticket to TC. It needed asking at checkin and the lounge. But it happened quite a few times. This is not an upgrade in the sense that both are Y, but it is nice when TC is less crowded and the middle seat is free. I wonder whether this is a common happening for Gold/plat as the occurences seemed random to me (empty planes, full planes,etc..)?
