Actually "Upgrade For Cash" are the words (I'm not sure if they understand the acronym UFC). There's a chart they use based on mileage. If they're asking for thousands of dollars, it means they think you want to re-fare to the next class. You can ask as soon as you see an agent.

I booked an Economy Plus ticket on UA for COS-LAX-NRT-TPE and back the same way (for ~$1K) - which should hit my 15,000 mile challenge, but I had budget for a business class (C?) fare on another airline (~$4K). So if I *could* get into business class for the LAX-NRT and NRT-LAX legs at least for $xxx each, I would be happy as a clam!
I will politely ask the gate agent about an "upgrade for cash" for that leg - presumably I must do that in LAX and not in COS?
