This all seems rather OTT to me.
Indeed, my mum managed to get a 0 year old, 2 year old and a 4 year old from Columbo to London and back a number of times in the late 70s, its hard to imagine that Heathrow in 2009 is going to be too much for the OP's wife.
Worst case scenario is that she'll spend too much in the shops!
