It has always been the case that BA will often renew Gold for members who are short a little short of the points required (and a little here can mean 200 or so), particularly if there has been service disruption which might have reduced the number of BA flights taken. This has happened to several friends of mine without their asking for it, and to another friend who wrote a letter explaining why he'd had to cancel certain flights (removal of F on a certain route, as I recall) and explaining his future travel plans, enclosing his new Silver card (cut in half) sent to WW.

Indeed, 6.3 in the BAEC Terms and Conditions makes it quite clear that reduction of tier level is entirely discretionary. There is no such explicit statement of discretion for advancement to a new level. If it weren't for the upcoming flights I'd say you'd have no chance (whereas an existing Gold would have a good chance of retention) but no harm in writing to ask for an "extension". Good luck.
