To be safe, I would not select a seat in one of the rows which might disappear. In short, I never sit past row 3 when I have a choice.
Although I might lose my F seat anyway if I'm lowest on the pole, there have been incidents blogged here where a last minute swap resulted in folks whose seats physically vanished being moved to the back without regard for how they got the F seat in the first place.
