A Japanese passenger plane with 222 people aboard made an emergency landing at Shanghai's Pudong airport shortly after takeoff Saturday afternoon, but no casualties were reported, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Xinhua said that 10 minutes after the airliner carrying 208 passengers and 14 crew members took from Hongqiao Airport in Shanghai at 2:30 p.m., the crew noticed engine problems and the plane began to shake slightly.

Aviation control authorities immediately diverted the plane to Pudong airport, where it successfully landed at 3:15 p.m. the report said without identifying the airline company.

Initial investigation suggests the plane hit birds after takeoff, it said.

Japan Airlines, on its website, said its Tokyo-bound flight JL8878 landed at Pudong airport at 3:14 p.m. after being diverted there. It said the plane had experienced a problem following its departure shortly before from the same city's Hongqiao Airport.

It did not elaborate on the nature of the problem other than to say it involved ''aircraft maintenance.''

Xinhua reported that as of 8 p.m., arrangements had been made for 70 passengers of the flight to take other flights to Japan on Saturday, while the rest would fly out on Sunday.
