I am confused about the meaning of back to back or nested tickets and am hoping for some help.

I have been trying to book an award ticket and cannot find availability from my home city of Austin. But, it appears I could get an award ticket from Miami to my ultimate destination. Can I buy a round trip ticket from Austin to Miami, and then use an award ticket within that time frame from Miami to somewhere else and back, then flying back from Miami to Austin to close out the trip?

Sorry for what might be a basic question for most of you.
