Does he mean, when you take a new flight you tell them to put those miles on your Midwest account? So it's only good for future stuff.

Yes. Once the miles are posted, you cannot move them like this. You can only get them credited for a new flight. That is like the CO-DL-NW scheme. You cannot move miles between the programs, but for a new flight, you can have them credited to whatever program you want. The only thing to watch is that partners do not inherit other airlines' partners. So, for example, if you take a flight on CO and they have a partner X who codeshares one of the flights, you cannot get NW miles for that codeshared flight.
