If you're going centre to centre, there is a Virgin train that can do the sprint to Euston in 4hr10mins! The views are excellent through the lakes in the daylight, otherwise getting down to Gatwick area is a royal pain in the *ss, add at least another hour onto any journey time from Euston.
The train is a nice leisurely journey as long as you're in first class,your destination is the centre of London and you don't plan on going back the same day. However if your destination is to one of the London airports then the plane is the only option.
