the saga (as much as woes re: travelling in WT can be classed as a saga) continues...
Called again, this time the US EC call centre, since it was after hours. The first CSR basically said, it can't be done, and when I asked if I could speak with someone more senior just hung up.
I then called again, spoke with a much more friendly chap. He didn't really know what was going on, and said I couldn't have the seats since we weren't flying with an infant. However, did put me on hold whilst he spoke with a supervisor. He said the decision to open up bassinet seats for selection is a discretionary one, and is made by the airline on a case by case basis?? The decision in this case seemed to be to "block the seats", which means that I could chose the bassinet seats, but only by physically going to the airport!! Otherwise, they won't be released, even at OLCI. This does seem somewhat ludicrous..
I'll give the UK centre one more call tomorrow am, but am now thoroughly confused..
