I traveling from NYC to Rome and back from Vienna around late August, coming back early Sept. or will it be cheaper to fly on an LCC between Rome and Vienna and avoind the open jaw return higher fare?

Also, What prices on economy class will I be looking at for travel during high season, and how early should I look into buying tickets?
and which airlines offer the best economy class service on these routings from NY?
