Just a pity that you can't spend a day in Luzern en route ....... compact but so much to see!!
Well, we'd spend at least a part of a day there - we'll be leaving Bern at the same time we'd be picking up the car the day before to avoid an extra day charge, so no later than 2 p.m. I imagine. So we'd be situated in Luzern at around 4 or so. And I'm in no hurry to get to Lugano the next day, so we'd spend at least part of the morning/afternoon in Luzern, as well. Trust me - with all I've heard about its beauty, it's not something I want to miss.

The Bern to Milan train isn't something I considered, because the Lugano to Florence one seems so problem-free. Especially given my desire to see Luzern.
