Hoxever if you plan to end up in Florence, have you considered Berne to Milan via the Lotschberg Tunnel? (Your Gotthard train will go via Milan anyway.) The scenery is good, but not so spectaular as the Gotthard) but the route might be easier to plan in your time frame.
Just a pity that you can't spend a day in Luzern en route ....... compact but so much to see!!
Well, we'd spend at least a part of a day there - we'll be leaving Bern at the same time we'd be picking up the car the day before to avoid an extra day charge, so no later than 2 p.m. I imagine. So we'd be situated in Luzern at around 4 or so. And I'm in no hurry to get to Lugano the next day, so we'd spend at least part of the morning/afternoon in Luzern, as well. Trust me - with all I've heard about its beauty, it's not something I want to miss.
The Bern to Milan train isn't something I considered, because the Lugano to Florence one seems so problem-free. Especially given my desire to see Luzern
