I just called EL AL and asked,

1. There is an option for non GL/PL to pay $100 (shorthaul) or $250 (longhaul) onboard or even at the gate to sit in business seats but eceonomy service. They will first offer it to GL/PL for free and then to other Matmid members and non members at a cost.

2. They also now offer last minute upgrade from any Economy class (T, V, K ect) to business at the gate or onboard:
longhaul: 500 points or $800
Short: 200 points or $300

HURRAY , so from now on I will try to book the cheapest fare to NY and upgrade at the airport.
