1. It depends where you are heading. When flying to the US, you could get awards on CO (until they leave ST), DL or NW, and thus a direct flight from LHR to the States
2. For Dubai, yes, you would most likely transit through AMS or CDG (unless you get an award on OK for example)
3. In principle, the price is the same, although an award on a partner could, potentially, be more expensive.
