ExpertFlyer and AA generally do have the requirements for advance purchase listed in the detailed fare rules, IME. If they are not there, then your TA is making it up as s/he goes along and is investing your float (much good may it do them.)

But you may in fact be given a holiday by not buying direct from AA and having to pay when the hold period expires.
