The route HASN'T been dropped.

It is being suspended temporarily from May as part of Virgin's policy of capacity reduction on less profitable routes.

They will begin to fly to Mumbai again when it is economically viable to do so.

Virgin do seem to be trying to weather the economic storm in a sensible way, by cutting back and consolidating flights.

Problem is, no one knows how long the 'storm' will last, or how powerful it will ultimately be.
