I think that you should be able to do a connection at Lucerne (Luzern) from Interlaken and then take the train south to Locarno. I wouldn't do this by choice by car on the dates you suggested, and the train route gives fantastic scenery with the least stress.

No wonder the cheaper train option was gone so quickly! I am leaning towards train travel only, but that might cut down places to visit. So if we were to eliminate Bern, Luzern or Lausanne from our stops, what should we visit for sure and what can we easily drop? I've got enough traffic in Los Angeles...
