a decent fare, is what the market will accept. Obviously, you were even willing to pay the $688 when the price went up to that point. I'm assuming (per your profile), that you are talking about ATL-SAN. Doesn't Delta have a lock on the ATL-SAN market with regard to non-stop flights (I'm certain I'll be corrected, if I'm wrong).
The best way to teach Delta a "lesson," if that is your desire, is to book away from Delta. Of course, you need to value the time/money equation with regard to the other flight options.
Airlines, and almost all businesses, are whores, when it comes to maximizing profit on monopolized routes [or markets]. Personally, I don't blame them... but, do remember, the final choice is up to you....
