You can't explain stupid, you just have to deal with it and hope it goes away. Every explanation I've ever heard from GA/FA is been pretty darn clear: you want, you pay. Whats also clear is the people in the OP didn't want to pay but still felt they should get whatever they wanted. I'd bet they were in their 20's-30's a product of the generation that spent their entire youth being told they were "special" and having people care about their "feelings" or "self-esteem", now we all get to suffer the result.
