This is good advice.
Several years ago my company no longer had UA as a preferred airline and when I asked my travel manager she told me that AA would match my status. Supposedly that would have included EXP PLT.
I never pursued it because for me UA is still the best price for my trips out of BWI or IAD, or I am always within the allowable difference or price guidelines. However, it sounds like the OP's booking system won't even show UA. Given that it might be time to try a new airline.
My trip tomorrow is the exception as I am flying to Tokyo via DFW on AA. Would love to be on the IAD-NRT non stop but the biz fare on AA was much better and the UA fare about $2500 higher.
