Cash upgrade is usually not allowed ex-HKG (at least for me....I have asked several times during check-in or while in the Lounge). They usually cite the reason "your ticket is a discounted ticket, so, can't use cash to upgrade, bla bla bla".
Maybe the economic downturn will persuade CX to take extra cash for the upgrades?
