When they used to ask "Has this bag been out of our possession since you packed it?" I would try to be honest and explain that I'd left it with the hotel front desk from check-out until late in the afternoon. I found out it's just easier to say "no."
Honest answers to that question ("Well, AA/LH/SQ has had it for the last three/two/fourteen hours," etc.) generally elicit repeated asking of the questions with a tight smile until I just answer, "No". Then the questioner is happy and I am on my way.
And people wonder why frequent travelers have no respect for the travel security complex.
