I know those are yearly, or seasonal marketing strategies, but in my experience, many companies will match your frequent loyalty status at others, since it shows your potential to spend money at their company! Send a fax with travel history to the customer service number explaining that you are looking for a consistent hotel partner to compliment your travels (check the many threads of FT for phone numbers) .... you will not be disappointed!
Should I join HH first? Or wait and see if Hilton offers me anything perhaps from a marketing list obtained from AA? And am I less likely to get offers being in Australia? I can give a USA address if needed. I have AA Platinum until Feb 2010 so no real hurry and my travel is pretty well booked this year but in 2010, HH status could be useful.
