Exactly correct. Wife and I have been Plat for most of the last 5 years. Since we tend to fly together, our status was always the same. She got a hotel status comp once (Starwood) - I never got one. You can't get it by asking - they have to pick you.
That’s not entirely correct. I called SPG, informed them of my AA Platinum status and they immediately upgraded me to Starwood Gold. Got the card in the mail a couple of weeks later.
