Yes, but if you do this before travel, to downgrade the original fare class must be available (and for B this is very likely). If you wait to day of travel, just any space in economy needs to be avialable.
The downside of waiting is the prime economy seats will be gone.
Upgrades (especially intercontential) have been clearing late.

At least I know there is a "Plan B" available if needed. I would hate to be trapped into blowing 15,000 miles on a 50 minute domestic flight.!
