Housekeeping enters room without knocking

Sorry if this is the wrong place – there are so many sub forums here! But travel security seems like the right place.

I’m a frequent hotel guest and I continue to be appalled at the number of times that housekeeping has entered my room (while I was inside) without first knocking or announcing themselves. I go ballistic whenever this happens and immediately call the front desk to complain and explain this is totally unacceptable.

I’ve learned that in most cases the latch that is part of the lock system has no effect on the universal card key available to hotel staff – even though the security section of the guest information guide always tells you to set it. And I do. The only thing that prevents entry is the mechanical chain or lever that is not part of the lock system. However, some are so feeble that I once saw the chain break off with virtually no effort by a housekeeping person entering my room unannounced.

I just don’t understand why hotels do not empathize to their staff to always knock and wait before entering a guest room. Some do a good job at that, but way too many hotels do not, even the better ones.
