I have also had trouble with the SFO premier check-in.

I had a significantly delayed flight out of OAK and UA reservations proactively put me on a non-stop from SFO. The agent would not give me my boarding pass without a $400 fee. I refused, walked over to the general member check-in and had absolutely no trouble getting my new boarding passes from an over-worked agent manning 4 stations.
