I think that this is a legitimate issue and I don't think "because that's how it works you idiot" is a particularly intelligent response.
Usually when one pays a premium for something one expects more - though this apparently does not apply to hotels. You can stay at a hotel for 50$ a night and get free bottled water, free internet, free paper and free breakfast, however, if you stay at a hotel for $200 or $500 or $4000 a night they nickel and dime you. The more you pay the more you pay is very counter intuitive.
I find that most trip advisor reviews could be more informative. When a person writes "it was cheap" or "it was expensive" you have no reference point as people generally omit actual numbers. Service complaints also can be misleading as bad service at a four seasons could be phenomenal service at a best western. You really have to take everything with a grain of salt and parse the reviews for common complains and kudos.
