I flew EWR-PEK and upgraded with CO miles and had my NW number in the record. My fare class was "H" (I think) that required miles and a co-pay.
Since I did not have a CO account I opened on and transferred Amex miles.
The CO agent took them from my new CO account without ever touching my NW FF #.
