Thanks for the early kudos. It was obvious on Thursday that snow would strike the area on Sunday/Monday and by Friday, it became easier to see how much would fall and where. The storm did shift about 150 miles further east than my forecast, so that in turn dragged the heaviest snowfalls 150 miles further east than expected. As a result, some portions of northwest NJ are getting just a few inches... while the NJ beaches and Long Island are getting well above a foot of snow. There's a huge variety of snowfalls across the area; there's a summary of that below. (And if you ever want to check out a forecast but don't have the patience to track down my forecast on TV or radio, just go to the Weatherboy Weather fanpage on Facebook ...or go to weatheronline.com

As far as weather for air travel, don't forget airlines like CO need to be concerned with what's happening with more places than just the runway conditions at the airport. And conditions on the ground don't always match up to conditions a few thousand feet above the airport. While there wasn't anything falling at the surface, there were icing conditions above the airport. There was a wedge of warm air... and a wedge of dry air in the layers of the atmosphere, so it was warm enough to produce water droplets/icing... but then too dry for the precipitation to make it to the ground without evaporating. Conditions worsened from there.... so I'm sure it'd be best to keep aircraft out of holding patterns in that type of airmass than it would be to hold them there... only to bring them down with the possibility of getting stuck at EWR from the eventual snowfall. In addition to the air, airlines also have to keep an eye on ground conditions: if an area of your work force is stuck home due to snow where they live (but not necessarily at the runway), it'd probably be best to trim schedules and reduce equipment since you won't have the manpower to run a full (or more full) schedule.
In any event, here's the snowfall totals through this morning... there's still a batch of heavy snow moving through, so some areas, especially coastal NJ, Long Island, and CT will get more.

Safe travels for those of you on the ground or flying through --it's pretty nasty out there, especially with blowing & drifting of snow from EWR and points east / northeast / southeast.
