Many of the questions are designed to identify an unwitting accomplice. He or she would not know how or when a bag was purchased, or might be overly prepared to answer the question. The thoughtful interviewer compares the answer to this question with the answer to others. (Who was with you when you packed your bags? When was this? Has anyone borrowed your suitcase? And so on.)

I've never totally understood the question about having one's laptop repaired recently. I mean... that's one extremely complicated terrorist scheme: a laptop repairman tampers with a computer knowing that this computer will be going on an overseas flight?
The laptop question is another one where the person asking the question can flip the machine over and see if the screws have been removed. They want to know if it was you or the repairman.

On a personal note: On every laptop I've ever had to take apart, I've messed up at least one screw. You'd think I'd get it right by now.
