That's similar to my issue too, as I'm flying SEA-LAX before getting on LAX-BKK, and I'm already upgraded on the SEA-LAX leg using my SWU, but of course if I don't get upgraded on LAX-NRT-BKK, that would be a waste. And I did pay extra for W class. But from the responses, I'm very likely good to go on a Y to C upgrade for LAX-BKK. And if not, then I contact the 1K desk to get my SWU restored, using 2 500's instead for the SEA-LAX hop. All part of the excitement of flying UA!
Yes, the same except it seems you are committed to going whether the upgrade comes through or not, while I would consider paying the cancelation fee and bailing out if the transPAC segment(s) did not clear on the outbound. (Not much choice once one has reached their destination and it is then a matter of the return, unless without certainty as to both the outbound
and return one might bail.) One is never told, are they, where they stand on the waitlist.
