In my case, the thought crossed my mind (long before you offered).
Issue is DL NEVER sells tickets for less than $1800 to my destination, NSI (or $3400 if you want to be PMU eligible). Economics don't work to buy someone a ticket for this.
My solution is to coordinate travel with friends already going to the same country and compensate them a little for their help with my extra pieces.
And DL is no longer in the running; travel will be on other airlines with much lower per bag fees!
