ARLINGTON, Va. - US Airways leaves bankruptcy Monday — during a war that has ravaged bookings — to test whether its reorganization was sufficient to help it survive a time of unprecedented financial turbulence in the airline industry.
The airline's speedy emergence from bankruptcy after eight months amazed experts who predicted a reorganization would take much longer. But US Airways' sprint from Chapter 11 protection is concluding in the midst of a war that threatens to devastate the entire industry.
In its business plan, the nation's seventh-largest airline projects a profit of more than $100 million next year beased on revenue growth of 13 percent, although the forecast was formulated before the Iraq (news - web sites) war's start. The company has lost more than $3.8 billion over the last two years.
