They are supposed to check if you can legally travel as airlines get rather large fines if they carry people they shouldn't have. So who is going to check the passports and visas of people to see if they'll be allowed into a particular country.

And in any case, given my experience of bag drops, you aren't going to save much time in check-in anyway
