When I did this a year ago or so, the agent told me that the MPM was higher for European routings than for direct routings. That makes sense, as you were redeeming more miles.
I have no idea if that's true, of course. From IAD, my routing to SIN via Europe only added about 2,000 miles over the "direct" IAD-SIN flight and was less than a routing via SFO would have been.
