That's definitely the case at SEA at the Horizon C2 gates. There's always a crowd of people standing waiting to board partially because there isn't enough seats for even half of the people to sit down. And, if you sit in the newer common area a little further down the terminal, you can't hear the gate announcements.
I was waiting to board QX2386 from C2C on Thursday, and it looked like atleast half the plane was crowding around the podium. I nearly had to push my way through the crowd to get my seat assignment!
EDIT: Note: I am a very firm believer that Non-Revs should board last (or at least in the last few) so I don't even bother moving towards the podium until the line has dwindled down to the last few. That always gives me a minute to chat with the gate agents anyway
