Inadequate seating in the boarding area can be another factor at certain airports, but not all.
That's definitely the case at SEA at the Horizon C2 gates. There's always a crowd of people standing waiting to board partially because there isn't enough seats for even half of the people to sit down. And, if you sit in the newer common area a little further down the terminal, you can't hear the gate announcements.
