Thanks for the great input. Sounds like the earlier we board the better to get a shot at a longe car seat leaving DEN. Any idea how early they let your board in Denver? It seems to make about a 50 minute stop there. Also, can we skip the greeting from our sleeper car attendant? I'd rather have a great seat in the observation car than hear the speech.

Well, I arrived at the station about 30 minutes before departure and just after I arrived, they started lining people up to check their tickets. Not sure if there was a separate line or call for sleeper passengers.
If you have a good coach attendant, they'll meet you at the door to board and actually walk you upstairs. You'll get the little speech (it only takes two or three minutes) right as you board and get settled.
If you don't get it right then, then yeah, feel free to leave. If you see your attendant, let them know you're heading to the lounge to stake out your seat. He or she will understand.
