If you're on an airline that offers interlining (Thai and Bangkok Airways for sure, AirAsia and Nok Air definitely not, don't know about others), you can also check your bags through onto the Austrian flight so they will be transferred automatically at BKK.

You can then also use airside transfer desks to check in for your OS flight.
