I'd say that I've seldom seen a nasty/stupid immigration agent (though I do have my prejudices based on meny, many trips to the US). They're usually quite nice and helpful fellows! On the other hand, these people in AMS (and elsewhere as well), who do the security check for US carriers are sooooooo bad (not in the May West sense), that they would certainly object if your name were written correctly: they'd think it was done on purpose to cheat one's way onto an american airline plane!
