it's pretty standard in malaria-prone areas (the tropics). 5-star or 2-star, there's no getting around it. i'd rather have less mosquitos and less chance to get malaria, while dealing with 30 seconds of unpleasant air. it airs out pretty quickly. since mosquitoes become active at dusk, it has to be done during that time. can be a shock if faced with it for the first time and hotel should have warned you earlier, but it's standard for those parts of the world.
i'm actually happy that hotel is taking care to reduce chance of illness as well as making dinner-time pleasant with less mosquitos.
sorry you had to find out in this way, but at least now you know to expect it.
